HughesNet Satellite Internet Speeds

HughesNet's high speed Internet access speeds are considerably faster than standard dial-up speeds. With these increased Hughes-Net Internet/DiRECWAY Internet speeds, subscribers have the ability to download large files, enjoy an enhanced online experience and be more productive. The table below compares the estimated time of typical Internet downloads using the home and professional HughesNet broadband satellite Internet service plans versus a 56K dial-up connection (speed based on typical response times).

HughesNet’s Internet access speeds are considerably faster than standard dial-up speeds. With these increased speeds, subscribers have the ability to download large files, enjoy an enhanced online experience, and be more productive.

The table below compares the estimated time of typical Internet downloads using the HughesNet Home and HughesNet Professional service plans versus a 33.6K dial-up
connection (speed based on typical response times).

LIMITATIONS OF SATELLITE INTERNET

Although the new HN7000s modem increases upload and download speeds for all residential and business service plans, high-speed Internet by satellite service is STILL NOT recommended for some sub-second time-sensitive types of Internet uses. The subsecond delay "Latency" of any satellite Internet access affects connection speeds. While this sub-second delay is mostly unnoticeable in general web browsing, it may have a significant impact on time-sensitive applications.

We do not recommend the following applications for use over HughesNet:
• Real-time online gaming, particularly “twitch” games such as Quake, Diablo etc.
• Real-time collaboration and conferencing, such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing
• VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Internet phone (Vonatge does work, but there is a delay)

In addition, connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service is not recommended, despite the faster speeds available with the HN7000s modem. If you choose to run VPN over satellite internet, your data speeds may be reduced as much as 50% to 75% while the VPN session is active. Once the VPN session is terminated, the subscriber’s typical connection speed resumes. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide configuring or troubleshooting support for subscriber’s issues associated with VPN connections.

Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server
